ENRICHING CALGARY WITH THE BEST
CHAMBER MUSIC
For the past thirty years, Calgary Pro Musica Society has been bringing the best in chamber music to Calgary audiences, a tradition we wish to continue for at least another three decades. With the vital assistance of the Calgary Region Arts Foundation, University of Calgary, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, corporate and individual sponsors, media sponsors, as well as the many gifts from our subscribers, the Calgary Pro Musica Society has been able to underwrite several important initiatives:
- engage five internationally acclaimed chamber music ensembles for a yearly season of concerts
- sponsor public broadcasts of our concert performances
- sponsor concert receptions in which young musicians and members of the audience have an opportunity to meet established artists of world renown and experience
- present master classes led by visiting artists at the University of Calgary’s Department of Music, exposing Alberta’s promising young artists to the very best in chamber music
Calgary Pro Musica Society is dedicated to maintaining its exemplary standard of concerts, musical receptions, public broadcasts and master classes. By supporting these important initiatives, Calgary Pro Musica Society is working to enhance the city as an important Canadian cultural centre.
OUR NEWEST AND MOST VITAL INITIATIVE –
LEAVING A SCHOLARSHIP LEGACY
There are many fine young musicians attending University of Calgary and Mount Royal College. The Calgary Pro Musica Society wishes to support their studies by underwriting scholarships. No promising young musician should ever be denied a chance to pursue their dream, enrich the cultural heritage of western music and provide others with the opportunity to hear beautiful chamber music because of a lack of funds. To find out more about Leaving a Legacy, see Ways to Help the Calgary Pro Musica Society.
CHAMBER MUSIC – A SHORT PROFILE
The most common definition of “chamber music” is music written for a small group of musicians – usually from two to eight – with one performer to a part and generally without conductor. At the Calgary Pro Musica Society, we embrace a broad definition of chamber music that includes not just the most common chamber ensembles – the string quartet (two violins, viola and cello), the piano trio (violin, cello, and piano) and woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon) – but spanning many combinations that can include strings, piano, wind instruments, voice and even chamber orchestras. We also try to represent the music of many eras from the Baroque masters and earlier to composition of the 20th and 21st centuries. The heart of chamber music is the spirit of collaboration. The democratic essence of the music engages the performers in a close musical dialogue and invites the audience to listen actively and thoughtfully. These qualities have lead many of history’s greatest composers to choose it as the medium to express their most profound and intimate musical thought. We invite you to join us and experience this compelling art form first hand. |
